Dear Celia and Coachella Uninc.,

Once again your work touches Mexico City.

Celia is actually a fellow Arab of mine - we attended CVHS 'not long ago'. This article and slide show reaches into my emotions again because here is our community once more suffering from the carelessness of big corporations. I first made Celia aware of a similar problem that my parents were facing on Avenue 66 in Thermal near Las Palmitas High School, an area also considered tribal land. My father who was at home at the time could not bare the odor of the soil that was brought in by a similar company to fill the existing reservoir or a recently abandoned land. It came to the point where he took the dog and drove elsewhere to sleep because the smell was unbearable. He was able to do that, but unfortunately for the neighbors who live next door and with families there was no option but to stay.

I got in touch with Celia for support, given that I am living here in Mexico City and we managed to get the EPA on board to help solve this problem.

There is not a moment when I have not been inspired by my friend and fellow teacher. She is a unique role-model to our community and one that will ensure, with the support of others, that there is a swift and meaningful solution to this.

Fight on, Celia. Please let me know how I can help from afar.

This is fascinating and it makes total sense when you have an understanding of what Passover and the Seder story is all about....true then, true today.

Hi Michael - You are right, I definitely should have included UCSF Fresno in my list of programs intended to address the doctor shortage in the Valley. I have interviewed some doctors in the UCSF Fresno program, and have been impressed by their dedication to the Valley's needs. Thanks for your comment, and for what you do.

I am surprised with no mention of the UCSF Fresno training programs in your piece. While we are all excited about the potential for the UC Merced medical school, it will be 7 years minimum before the current 5 first year students are ready to practice medicine. On the other hand UCSF Fresno graduates over 70 specialists and subspecialists each year ready to assume practice.

hi Rebecca. Thanks for your coverage on this struggle for safe drinking water in the valley. FYI, Mark Bittman of the NYT just linked to a blog on the issue here - http://bittman.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/02/07/what-were-reading-now/

Sadly, I am leaving California because of the complete elimination of state funding to public libraries. (Last year, public libraries received $30 million). This, coupled with cuts to public universities (and their libraries) will take libraries back 30 years.
I can't live here anymore.

What would I like to read more about; SOLUTIONS being IMPLEMENTED! What should be the highest priority; Improved Health Care to help those already affected. The other four topics need long-term strategies; improved health care will provide better data on the costs related to pollution and we all know that $ are a major driver for political decisions.

We know the stats and the needs, and it is more than due time to take action on these issues that impact the future of our community and of California. We need to create pathways out of poverty at every level to change this trajectory for Latinos. Instead of planning for future prison beds, we can act locally by volunteering to read and increasing literacy rates, or create other opportunities for youth. I hope that everyone that reads the article will make a concerted effort to take action. Gracias

The Health and Well being of the Latino community in California will imply the stability of the State in the near future. It is also relevant to share that that is also the case nationally in decades to come. Meaning, we have some work to do! Most of it around the bringing down of barriers to more effectively work as a regional community in the Valley and to assess assets and gaps to effectively provide a better service to all residents. The Measure of the Valley event was very poignant in the message of what must be done with the dialogue of the participants from various institutions willing to get it done. Big kudos to the American Human Development Project and all those who participated in the discussion with their issues, concerns and recommendations.
