Top 5 reasons to love the Lip Sync contestavatar

with 7 comments

Last Friday night, I covered the Fresno-regional High School Principals Lip Sync Contest.

In case you’re not familiar with the contest, here are the details: All eight schools that participated in the competition earned $1,000 in scholarship money. The top three high schools - Sanger, Clovis West, and Buchanan – earned more scholarship money. Those three schools, plus fourth-place Clovis East, will continue on to the state competition in Modesto this weekend. (Read next week’s edition of Vida for coverage of the state meet!)

Five reasons to love the 2010 Fresno-regional High School Principals Lip Sync Contest:

  1. There was more break dancing – by both principals and students – this year than in past years. Way to spice up the performances!
  2. Costume changes! I’m constantly impressed by the amount of effort that goes into these performances.
  3. The good-natured sense of competition that permeated the contest. Principals and students seemed determined to have fun and do their best – though they admitted that winning was great, too!
  4. Great music variety! Who wouldn’t want to get up and dance to Wisin and Yandel’s “Me Estás Tentando,” Tito El Bambino’s “El Amor,” and other salsa songs and regional music?
  5. Principals who are willing to go out of their comfort zones (hello, lip-syc-ing to songs in Spanish, getting down to reggaeton songs, and grooving to salsa music!) in order to bond with their students and win scholarship money.

Clovis East High School principal Darin Tockey and his students earned fourth place at the March 19 competition.

Buchanan principal Ricci Ulrich and her students earned third place at the competition.

  1. Where is Sanger High School’s video performance?!
I have been searching the web for weeks now and I finally find something on the Lip Sync Contest, but I’m disppointed that nothing mentioned about Sanger High.
All the schools are great and I commend all the principals for taking their time off their busy schedules to perform with their students…BUT if you haven’t seen Sanger High–you haven’t seen the best. Sanger High is one of those schools with very high standards because they are not only a high performing school in academics, but also in the Lip Sync Contest. Sanger’s performances are very unique. If I were you I would write a story of the people in charge of putting together the Lip Sync Contest year after year…you will agree with me it’s a community effort. APACHE Pride lives on FOREVER!!!

  2. Hi LipSyncFan! I actually have videos of all of the participating schools, and will be uploading them throughout this week. I agree – all the schools did great in the competition, and I want to make sure all their videos get online! Thanks for your comment. – Rebecca

  5. Hi Rebecca,
A week ago, you said you would make sure all the video would get online and I still haven’t seen Sanger’s video yet.
By the way when is the State Competition?

  6. Sanger is creative, artistic, original, adavanced and really hard working, I persoanlly belive no other school bonds together as a group forming great relationships like Sanger High does, that was our key to winning our competetions.

  7. Sanger is good, but in ten years they have yet to win a state championship. CW on the other hand has five in the last six years! We have set the bar higher than ever before! Go d-dub!!
