Report from the Field: It’s a Small Valleyavatar

My co-worker Dan and I spent Thursday morning in Delano. After an action-packed morning, which included interviewing the principal of Cesar E. Chavez High School, and speaking with longtime members of the United Farm Workers, we stopped in at Jennie’s Café for lunch.

As the waitress placed my glass of iced tea on the table, she told me, in Spanish, that she knew me. I wasn’t too surprised – people often recognize me as Vida en el Valle’s gringa reporter – so I mentioned that I worked for Vida.

“Yes, I know,” she said to me in Spanish. “You interviewed me on Jan. 11 when I became a citizen in Fresno.”

Once she said that, I did remember interviewing her at a recent naturalization ceremony at the Fresno Convention Center, and I even remembered her telling me that she worked at Jennie’s Café in Delano. We shared a laugh, and agreed that it’s a small Valley!

This was a great little story. But to find out why we were in Delano, you’ll have to pick up next week’s edition of Vida!
