Meet Gaby Ramírez!
A few weeks ago, I introduced Vida blog readers to Brianna de Alba, an emerging teenage pop star. Today, I’m introducing you to another young, talented, and beautiful young woman: singer and book author Gaby Ramírez.
Last Friday, I interviewed 14-year-old Gaby Ramírez about her Día de los Muertos altar, which she created to honor seven of her relatives who died of cancer. The altar will be on display at Arte Américas through Nov. 25.
I was very impressed with Gaby’s knowledge of the Día de los Muertos traditions. She taught me about her altar: How she included three tiers to symbolize the three levels of death, an arch to symbolize the entrance to heaven and the way to come back, water for purity, and candles to light the way for souls to come back.
I was just as impressed when the formal interview ended and the conversation shifted to Gaby’s career. The Corcoran native, who is now home-schooled, has sang mariachi music all her life, and is now singing “Pop Rock & B,” as she called it. She has a bilingual book series – about her crazy cat, Tilo – coming out, as well as a record.
You can check out Gaby on her MySpace page – www.myspace.com/gabyminidiva. Or, check out her YouTube videos!
