It was hilarious. New York Yankees’ Manager Joe Girardi tells the umpire that Mariano Rivera will attempt to close out the American League Championship Series opening game against visiting Los Angeles Angels on Friday.

“Rivera,” says Girardi. And the ump says, “Who?” And Girardi responds, “This new guy we got.” And the ump responds, “Up from Triple-A, huh?”

It’s only the ”Mo” man who in June recorded his 500th career save and is destined for the Hall of Fame. And he’s not finished.

Definitely hilarious though, ‘Oh this new guy we got.’ By the way, Mariano also earned his first RBI in the same game where he earned the 500.

The Yankees’ closer continues to be post-season impressive, finishing out the Angels for his record 36th save. He kept the Angels without a hit, closing out the ninth.

It’s was the perfect ending to CC Sabathia’s (a 2007 Cy Young award recipient) pitching on Friday: He’s equally impressive at 2-0 and with a postseason 1.23 ERA with the Yankees. The Angels managed a double and three singles, but CC struck out seven, walking just one toward the 4-1 in the ALCS game in New York. Before the Yankees, CC was averaging 7.92 ERA in postseason play.

Manager Mike Scioscia and the Angels will try to even the series today. First pitch is at 7:57 eastern.
