On the Web: Two sites highlight Valley issuesavatar

without comments

Vida features a weekly column – “En La Red/On the Web” – that recommends a Web site worth checking out. Today, I’m recommending two sites that shine a spotlight on issues in the Valley.

In case you didn’t see this last week, Newsweek published a five-part series on the economic crises in the San Joaquin Valley, called “The Valley of Shadows.”

For me, a reporter who has been covering similar issues for nine months now (!), these articles didn’t feature a lot of new information. But the fact that a national publication devoted so much time and space to the Valley and its issues is very newsworthy.

And if you drive through the Valley as much as I do and sometimes wonder what goes on in the small communities you pass along the way, or if you are interested in environmental issues and their impact on local communities, check out the Web site of the Invisible-5 Audio Project.

The Invisible-5 is an audio tour along Interstate 5 between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and it introduces you to residents of small communities who are fighting for environmental justice. You can download the segments from the site, or you can order the two-CD set.

Happy reading, listening and learning!
