Cast your vote for the “Soy Bella” contest!
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of interviewing Jovahna Aguilar, who will be14 next week. Jovahna is one of five finalists in the “Soy Bella” contest, sponsored by Dove and Seventeen Magazine.

For the contest, young women across the country submitted a photo and wrote a short essay about what makes them feel strong and beautiful. The top five entries – including Jovahna’s – have been posted on Seventeen’s website, and you can vote for your favorite story through July 31. The girl who receives the most votes will win $1,000 for her quinceañera.
After spending about an hour with Jovahna and her mother, Josie, I learned that Jovahna is a great candidate for this contest. Jovahna began having seizures about six months ago, but she hasn’t let her juvenile-onset epilepsy slow her down. She has kept up her grades at school, has kept a smile on her face, and as she writes in her Soy Bella essay, “I am my own inspiration.”

Kids these days have to endure many challenges and obstacles, and despite all that, they still have a great positive attitude toward life.
After reading all personal stories of these young ladies, I chose Jovahna, 14 from Fresno CA for my vote. Her down to Earth and very humble story was the reason for my decision.
