Selma residents open their homes as they host several block parties over the Fourth of July weekend.

The city’s “official” celebration took place on July 3 at Selma High School’s Staley Stadium, where live music preceded a 35-minute fireworks show just after sunset.

For the official get-together, many Selmans have an annual routine. For example, several families set up camp at Jackson Elementary School, just north of Selma High along Wright Street.

The kids play in the kindergarten playground, while the adults prepare steaks, hot dogs and hamburgers on portable grills.

After dinner, spectators can easily throw down a blankets and pillows on the grass, cuddle up and watch the fireworks. This is a pretty cool setting.

In the residential area: Homeowners invite neighbors to individual parties. Construction signs block off several streets around the high school, but visitors, without worry, enter and double-park.  Police enforcement is somewhat “relaxed” over the weekend, depending on the situation.

As we walked from one party to another, one neighbor said, ‘There’s food inside, go on in.’  We were treated to a smorgasbord of delicious meat dishes, salads and beverages.
On Aspen Street, a professional disc jockey lit up the evening with nightclub lights, playing music well into the evening. A day later, the Olive Street residents celebrated their party with another pro disc jockey. He had the lights thing going too, while mixing it up with Ramón Ayala, Michael Jackson and some country too. This is our third year now. And it’s gotten a lot better,” said Roy-somthing. I can’t remember his name; maybe I was having too good of a time.

Here’s a tip: Bring your lawn chair, so that you can stop and shoot the breeze with anyone at anytime. A motorcycle would be cool too.
