Peru: Land of the Incas… And the land of BBQ, flowers, and glaciers
PACHAMANCA! In this traditional Andean dish, Peruvians cook meat – beef, pork, chicken, guinea pig – over hot rocks, layer veggies – potatoes, plantains, fava beans – over the meat, and then let the food cook for about 45 minutes. The result is pure deliciousness. It’s a good thing we were hungry after all that hiking!

Before.

After.
TROPICAL FLOWERS: Anyone who has known me for more than five minutes knows I have a slight predilection for the color pink. As we hiked through tropical cloud forests, I couldn’t stop myself from photographing these beautiful pink flowers.

Pink star-shaped flower.
GLACIERS: During our hike, we climbed to the top of a mountain with an elevation of more than 15,000 feet. Up there, it was cold and windy, and we had great views of snow-capped mountains. (Now that I’m back in Fresno and it’s 108 degrees, I quite miss that refreshing, cold weather!)

Only rocks can survive at 15,000 feet.
RUINS: Obviously, no list of trip highlights would be complete without mentioning Machu Picchu, as well as the other ruins we visited in the Sacred Valley – Pisac and Ollantaytambo.
