Mike Ruiz Earns USA Boxing’s Nod vs. Great Britainavatar

without comments

I received a late-night (like 10 p.m., not too late for me) call from Mike Ruiz, the runner up in the National Golden Gloves tourney. He wasn’t in jail or anything, not that he would call me if he was, but I doubt he’ll ever be in handcuffs.

No, Ruiz was in Colorado Springs. More specifically at the Olympic Training Center where the nation’s leading athletes train for the Olympics and other international appearances. It was the end of a long day of training under the direction of some of the coaches that take Olympic hopefuls around the world for international bouts.

Ruiz, a product of Aleman Boxing in Fresno, has been invited by USA Boxing to train at the OTC and to represent the United States in an upcoming bout against Britain.

A 5-foot-3, 112-pound, lightweight, Ruiz has been honing his skill in the ring in Fresno under the direction of his father, Mike Ruiz, Sr., Frank Aleman and former world champion Hector Lizarraga.

At the OTC, Ruiz will work further his skill and possibly earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic Boxing Team, if he qualifies for the London Olympic Games in 2012.
