Miss California Pageant: So You Think You Can Dance?avatar

I love going to the Miss California Pageant. With the exception of this year, I’ve covered it for the past two or three at the Fresno Convention Center. But, I did get to go on Thursday just to take photos.

In the past years, I’ve gotten to interview several contestants. It’s really cool, hearing about what they would like to do with their lives and of the struggles they have faced and conquered.

They often share personal feelings about the people in their lives who give them strength and inspiration. It usually turns out to be a fulfilling conversation. It’s a perk that comes with covering the pageant.

But, I’ve always had a problem with the dance routines. I feel for these young ladies because, if you have a problem with rhythm (remember Steve Martin in that one movie?), then it must be difficult to perform on stage in front of a live audience with the spotlight right in your face!

It’s obvious that some of the contestants struggle through the pieces and it nearly resembles the TV show, “So you think you can dance?”.

With the media credential, you get a seat in one of the first three rows during the competition.

When you’re this close and, you have a telephoto lens, you can see some of the contestants faces, wishing this group dance routine would hurry up and be over.

Pageant contestants hope for a shot at Miss America.

Fifty-five contestants in the Miss California Pageant are hoping for a shot at Miss America in Las Vegas.

On the other hand, many of the contestants, such as Miss Yosemite Valley Kristy Cavinder, have no problem with a dance routine. Miss Cavinder displayed grace and style in her talent show portion of the pageant, as did many of the contestants.

Oh well. I think all of  you are winners anyway and you don’t need judges to tell you that, but, on the other hand, that scholarship money would be nice.
