Jane Vicente waited patiently.

Vicente was one of many dancers who waited in the dark backstage of Fresno City College’s drama department. It was the annual Noche de Danza Mexicana, where last Saturday several folkloric groups exhibit traditional Mexican dress and dance.

Vicente and Grupo Oyohualli de Bakersfield would be the next performance. They impressed spectators with their exhibit of a dance that has origins back in history to the Yucatán Peninsula of México.

Vicente held a tin tray full of drinking glasses and spirits, while she and her partners were adorned in a brilliant garment for the occassion, while moving in unison to a pre-recorded Mexican melody.

Martin Márquez and Alma Velasco also performed several dance routines with their respective groups.

Márquez was in last year’s show too.

In between the pieces, the performers rushed back to the dressing rooms and came ready for the next dance.

Grupo Folklórico de Fresno City College hosted the event. Los Danzantes de Tlaloc, Grupo Oyohualli, Grupo Folklórico Sin Fronteras were featured throughout the evening.
