The ferris wheel can be seen through redwoods at Selma's Lincoln Park.

The ferris wheel gave riders a scenic view of downtown Selma.

Check out the photo gallery of this event too. Go to galleries, Raisin Festival or Cinco de Mayo – Selma.

Cinco de Mayo was celebrated the best way it could in Selma.

Lincoln Park is the site of Selma’s Raisin Festival which culminated last Sunday (May 3) with the Cinco de Mayo Celebration.

There’s at least one redwood tree that towers over Lincoln Park. It’s the quaint setting where Berta Olivia of Stockton sang traditional pieces from such artists as Juan Gabriel.  And where she received noted applause from about 150 spectators, including my high school classmate, Ethel Fierro, as they dined on a perfect evening in the park.

It’s also where hundreds, and not thousands, came to take a stroll through the park while their children begged for tickets to the rides. And while the event only attracts a percentage of what The Big Fresno Fair caters to, it’s still large enough to close the Selma Branch of the Fresno County Library.

Analyssa Gómez, 6, and Karis Yzaguirre, 9, enjoyed snow cones, while Noah Guerrero, 10, and Ricky Coker, 7, challenged everyone who dared come near their bumper car.

José Bonilla, 3, kept a firm grip while on the roller coaster as if the car, which resembles an alligator, would crawl or swim away with him.

Selma has no Raisin Festival parade for this event. But maybe there should be?

By the way, the Band Festival does have a parade and features about 30 to 50 marching bands. The day ends at Selma High School, where the bands compete in a half-time show.
