Mike Ruiz is ranked No. 3 in the nation.

Mike Ruiz is ranked No. 3 in the nation.

Mike Ruiz of Aleman Boxing in Fresno just earned a berth in the Men’s National Golden Gloves Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Ruiz, 19 of Fresno, is the third-ranked boxer in the United States by USA Boxing. The Salt Lake competition begins on May 3 and ends May 10. Ruiz will face off against some of the best flyweights in the nation throughout the competition.

If he continues in his winning ways, Ruiz could possibly be an Olympian in the 2010 Olympic Games in London.

“My father made everything possible for me; he is my best friend,” Ruiz says. “There is no one in the world that believes more in me.”

How he got here: He won the 112-pound division in the Central California Association Championships, which were held in Avenal last weekend. Get this: In 2008, Ruiz won a silver medal in the national PAL tournament and a bronze in the men’s nationals. AWESOME!

Ruiz, a graduate of Fresno’s McLane High and who is attending Fresno City College, began boxing in 2006.

Frank Aleman, a former pro himself, operates the boxing gym in south Fresno.

  5. Received an e-mail from Frank Aleman of Aleman Boxing in Fresno.
From Salt Lake City, Utah, Mike Ruiz lost a split decision to Louie Byrd, who is the Colorado-New Mexico Champion for the National Golden Gloves Title.

If you must lose, this is the way you want to go: Ruiz lost, 3-2, but takes the silver medal from the National Golden Gloves.
