Desperate for water… and messages about wateravatar

with one comment

I spent all of Wednesday learning about California’s current water crisis. I learned just how critical this water issue is, as I spent a couple of hours at a California State Board of Food and Agriculture meeting, and spent the afternoon speaking with farmworkers who were laid off from jobs they had held for 30 or more years.
I’ll be writing a more in-depth story about the water issue in next week’s edition of Vida, but this is the general problem: The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation officials have said that parched reservoirs and little rainfall is forcing them to allocate no water to farmers this year. That means that about 70,000 people could lose agriculture-related jobs, according to one estimate, farmers and growers won’t be able to plant crops, and consumers across the country might be forced to pay more for fruits and vegetables.

During my water-filled day, I saw two powerful water campaign slogans:

- “Food grows where water flows
- “No water, no future; No future, no jobs; No water, no farming; No farming, no food”

Can you think of  other phrases/messages that describe how important water is to communities, agriculture, and the environment? Maybe you’ve seen water-related billboards along the highways (I know I have) or maybe you learned about water conservation in school. Whatever you’ve got, post it here!
